Surface Paving – material and function in form

Program
Industriel Design
Projekt af
Sanne Juel Bøckhaus

Reinterpretation of the classic square concrete paving elements used widely in urban streets around Copenhagen.

The flexibility of this paving solution makes it adaptable in relation to drainage requirements and visual desires.

Using Danish raw materials partially substituted by upcycling discarded materials from the building and stone masonry industry result in significant savings on precious raw materials.

The joint spacing is increased by the rounded shapes allowing more rainwater to drain through, thus meeting climate change-induced requirements.

Drains connected to a grid-shaped drainage system leading to water-collecting fascines can be incorporated.

Visual requirements are easily met as the versatile shapes can be laid in stringent or organic patterns along with a choice to colour the elements with brick dust.
