CAFxKADK Lecture Series: Pippo Ciorra - an introduction to Italian cold war architecture from an insider

KADK, The School of Architecture, and the Copenhagen Architecture Festival invites you to the CAF x KADK lecture series presented by prominent contemporary architects, filmmakers, and artists from a variety of generations and continents. The presenters will engage with problems concerning architecture and urbanization, each in their own way, influencing the architecture profession and the arts in 2019.

Get an insider’s look into Cold War architecture and post-war political and architectural discourses in Italy.

In the early decades after the end of the war, the state of the Cold War period in Italy was marked by the massive presence of the Americans financially, culturally and otherwise. At the same time, the emergence of Europe's largest communist party served as a framework for exchange between architects, philosophers, and other intellectuals, as well as (for some) violent occupations of public space in the 1970s. Pippo Ciorro, architect and senior curator at MAXXII in Rome, was part of it all. His lecture will describe how the Cold War period in Italy had a major impact on modern architecture and thinkers such as Bruno Zevi, Manfredo Tafuri, Aldo Rossi, Angelo Mangiarotti, and Carlo Aymonino.
