Measurement & Meaning

- Is two joint lectures that are addressing similar questions but from different angles. 

The lectures are held by two world known scholars within each their field.Dr. David Leatherbarrow and Dr. Ali Malkawi, who have visited the Scandinavian countries over a number of years. During their visits they have studied the way we as architects deal with new demands for sustainability within a strong cultural setting.

As VELUX Visiting Professors from 2013-14 they have engaged in discussions across the Phd School, the CINARK research environment, and during the last year the Candidate Program SET- Settlement, Ecology & Tectonics, at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts  School of Architecture.

We welcome them back for this joint engagement at our school.

This lecture takes point of departure in the famous books by Victor Olgyay; Architecture and Climate et al.

In regard of architectural meaning and culture it questions what is at issue with some modern and contemporary projects, and readable images as well as performative operations of building facades are unfolded. 

Visualizing the Invisible
Ali Malkawi

This lecture addresses why we need to measure performance in building and how. The aim is to to present the current state in research and practice within the field and to provide a critical discussion of the latest in building simulation and current misconceptions.

David Leatherbarrow is an architect, writer and professor at PennDesign, University of Pennsylvania.

David Leatherbarrow is one of the most productive and vivid theoreticians within the academic field of architecture of today. Through studies of cultural aspects that are linked to technological issues and questions of context his ideas and writings are rooted in a strong ethical tradition in terms of thinking and teaching architecture. His books include: Architecture Oriented Otherwise (Princeton, 2008), Surface Architecture (with Mohsen Mostafavi), (MIT, 2005), Topographical Stories (UPENN, 2004), Uncommon Ground (MIT, 2000), Roots of Architectural Invention (Cambridge, 1993), On Weathering: The Life of Buildings in Time (MIT, 1993)

Ali Malkawi is an architect, Professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design, and Founding Director of the Harvard Center for Green Buildings and Cities.

Malkawi is an international scholar and expert in building simulation, energy conservation, and sustainability in buildings. He teaches architectural technology and computation and conducts research in the areas of computational simulation, building performance evaluation, and advanced visualization. He is co-editor of two books on the subject of computationally-driven design and simulation: Advanced Building Simulation (Routledge, 2004) and Performative Architecture–Beyond Instrumentality (Routledge, 2005).
