Institute of Architecture and Design, KADK, invites you to the International Lecture Series Fall 2018/Spring 2019 "The Room of Things".
The lecture explores the role of the cornice in the architecture of the interior, by looking at the mid-eighteenth century discussion about ornament and its origins. In particular, it will discuss how authors like Laugier and Boffrand view the relationship between interior and exterior ornament, and how these views betray unease with or enthusiasm for the expressive potential of the cornice. These attitudes will be mapped against the phenomenon of the rococo, and the way it privileges secondary elements of architectural composition, such as cornices, over tectonic elements like columns and walls.
