This project explores Iceland’s geographic and cultural condition at the periphery of the Arctic Circle. Its extreme weather conditions and atmospheric phenomena present apparent obstacles and potentials for the built environment. A critique against the passive, hermetic environment of many contemporary buildings, this proposition is an architectural playground, spatializing climatic, weather and seasonal conditions for the purpose of music experimentation in Reykjavik. Through merging two distinct programs of an alternative recording studio and performance venue, the proposition challenges existing programmatic and cultural frameworks towards a site-specific, ecological response to the eclectic music scene and cultural identity of Iceland.

“In extreme climates, weather often produces a hermetic architecture that encloses the interior to account for the extremes...As ‘green’ architecture is offered a more substantial role in contemporary society, a new relationship must be afforded between architecture and weather that allows buildings to exploit the productive aspects of the atmosphere.”- Arium: Weather & Architecture, 2010
