Parametric Approaches I

Dato
20.11.2006

An international symposium on the development of digital architecture for students and professionals. Organised by Centre for Information Technology and Architecture, Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture.

Speakers
Mark Goulthorpe - MIT Department of Architecture / d*ECOI
Ali Rahim - University of Pennsylvania, Harvard Graduate School of Design, CAP
Lars Hesselgren - Kohn Pedersen Fox, London
Claus Peder Pedersen - Afdeling 6, Royal Academy of Fine Arts Copenhagen
Mateusz Kozlowski - Henning Larsens Tegnestue, Copenhagen

Parametric design strategies are changing the way the conceptualisation, design and realisation of architecture takes place. The thinking of a digital practice in architecture is currently reshaping design from the setting of absolutes to the proposal of open variables suggesting a state space of possible solutions. Approaches and aims to parametric design differ and contradict, depending on the methods and individuals involved.

Parametric Approaches seeks to explore some different tasks, their roots and protagonists. The seminar discusses the capacity of computational systems to model variance and ask how architects are to think through the consequences of such shift towards existing design paradigms. The seminar invites practitioners as well as theoreticians to discuss recent projects, historic roots and classifications as well as emerging technologies. Their statements address the formal as well as the technical potentials in architectural design.
