Health + Sanitation

I forlængelse af udstillingen ’Africa - Rethinking Architecture and Design’ præsenterer KADK en åben seminarrække, der sætter fokus på de udfordringer og muligheder som følger i kølvandet på kontinentets økonomiske og befolkningsmæssige boom. Ud fra emner som fx sundhed, identitet og byudvikling diskuterer vi hvordan arkitekter og designere kan byde ind med bæredygtige og innovative løsninger på disse områder.

African life expectancy is lower than on any other continent, intensified by inadequate housing, poor health facilities and a lack of access to or funding for medicine. Architecture can play a central role in improving this condition, through the design of medical facilities, housing and public spaces which tackle issues of hygiene, vector-borne infections and sanitation.

Should sustainable development focus on access to medicine and medical facilities? Or could healthy housing design be a model for preventative architecture? How could these innovations be democratised through the sharing of health-centric design fundamentals?

Join us for an exploration of projects that are tackling issues of health through design, and a discussion around their future development and potential.

Speakers
Sarah Ruel-Bergeronis an Architect and Project Manager with ARCHIVE Global, working around the world to combat disease through environmental design. ARCHIVE use one basic right - housing - to deliver one basic need - health. Sarah is a specialist in Building Design and Construction, and is particularly focused on sustainable design, resiliency and hazard mitigation in vulnerable environments.

Graham Alabaster is an Engineer and Chief of the Waste Management & Sanitation department at UN Habitat, working with issues of urban development, health and environment. Graham also works with WHO’s Department for Public Health and Environment, and is a world expert on water sanitation and waste management.

Flemming Konradsen is a professor of international environmental health at the University of Copenhagen, with more than twenty years of research and programming experience in the field of environmental health and global health. Professor Konradsen focuses his research on human health related to water supply, sanitation and hygiene, and control of vector borne diseases in Africa.

Moderator Jakob Brandtberg Knudsen is the Head of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, KADK. As founder of the architectural practice Ingvartsen Arkitekter, Jakob has pursued his interest in the capacity for architecture to tackle specific problems and issues, with a particular focus on architectural projects that can alleviate the spread of malaria in Tanzania.
