This lecture will provide an overview of the ways in which, in the era of modernity up the present day, inside nature has been used for a variety of purposes.
At the same time it has continually acted as a memory of life before industrialisation and urbanisation; as a form of therapy; and as a means of improving theenvironment.
While huge disruptions have occurred in the history of design over that period - Victorian historicism gave way to modernism and thence to late- and post-modernism - nature inside has consistently played important roles in our inside spaces, both private and public
