KADK, SPACE10, Dark Matter Labs and AA (Architectural Association School of Architecture) are pleased to present “We Are New Europeans”. Join us for an evening that asks how design and architecture could re-energise collaboration between European cities.

Europe’s modern cities were built on the ideals of welfare; free education, healthcare, social services, social security and housing – making sure people had a part in creating society.

Today, those ideals help solidify a shared identity: by functioning as fertile ground for international collaboration, European cities unite us across nationalities to share our knowledge and cultures and believe in the European project.

But recently, that cross-border camaraderie has become increasingly challenged. Climate change, ageing populations, mass migration, increasing inequality, the undermining of democracy, and declining trust in our institutions add up to a politics of isolationism—with Brexit being the most recent example.

But at the same time, we’re seeing new possibilities for collaborative ways of working – from making new shared homes, to on-demand healthcare over your phone, from new models of 21st century education, to using tech to help distribute neighbourhood care for the elderly.

With all of this in mind, is it possible to re-energise the European tradition of collaboration between our cities? What tools would we need and how would they be built into our cities? How could design and architecture galvanise collaboration beyond national and geographical borders, while staying meaningful and relevant to place & context?

Friday Bar
Join us to discuss this, and hear about the work of a 3 day workshop between KADK's graduate programme 'Urbanism & Societal Change' run by Deane Simpson and Charles Bessard and the AA (Dip.13) run by Dark Matter Labs  – to table new rights and freedoms for future Europeans and their effect on our future cities. There will be a panel discussion covering the different context and approaches from the two schools, as well as an question and answer round.
