Developed through new technical possibilities and supporting the needs of the great Industrial expansion in Europe, steel in the last decades of the 19C and the beginning of the 20C as never before, creates opportunities for spanning far, building high and constructing fast.
The lecture presents the architectural journey through the use of wrought iron, cast iron and steel. As with many new materials, often to start with the architectural language is not fully in step with the material physical capabilities. Often designs, details and building techniques are based on traditional and at the time known materials as wood and masonry.
In comparison to other materials, steel has made an immense impact on our current day architecture, design and building methods, enabling industrialized building techniques and lightweight structures with enormous spans to be common day occurrence.
The fascinating journey of the “new” at the time material – steel will be presented through examples as the Paris Metro stations by Hector Guimard, the Bibliotheque Sainte-Genevieve in Paris by Henri Labrouste, Sir Joseph Paxton’s green-houses, the break-through in bridge desig, long span structures for railway halls etc.
The lecture will be taught by Olga Popovic Larsen, Professor of the institut of Architecture and Technology.
