Description
This PhD course discusses scientific theory surrounding practices of experiment, and the role of experiment in design. Using original philosophical texts and examples from design research practice, the notion of experiment and its relation to theory building and testing will be examined, discussed and critiqued.

The course will be structured around reading, lectures, open discussion, peer critiqued written assignment (approx. 2000 words) and verbal presentation in seminar format.

The primary learning objective is to develop the ability to critically reflect upon the role, or possible roles, of experiment within their own research practice. Students demonstrate this through the written and verbal presentation components of the course.

The course holds particular relevance for PhD students employing practice‐based methodologies. This includes students from across the three schools at KADK, and potentially beyond once the course has established itself.

PhD seminar with Professor, David Leatherbarrow, where he will present and elaborate on themes as; ; 'landscape', 'location', 'performance of buildings', 'material and ecological culture' etc. 

Topics he has studied and cultivated for many years through an 'implicite critique' of fundamental as well as current paradoxes in architecture.

Across a number of selected essays he will interpret the texts in an informal format.

There will be opportunity to ask questions about the ideas behind the texts and discuss issues related to your own projects and considerations.

Description

The annual course introduces different research positions currently practiced at KA. This year the course focuses on the relation between theory and research practice in an architectural research context, exemplified by six presentations by researchers at KA, and followed by panel discussions.

A brief look at research and development projects (KUV) at KA reveals not only a rich landscape of different theoretical positions and statements, but also a variety of different approaches to theory. The use of and reference to theory and theoretical positions from outside the discipline of architecture are common in some projects, whereas others are characterized by normative, experimental and evaluative approaches and uses.

Some uses theory to confirm and put in to perspective opinions and conclusions based on analysis of empirically material. Others construct a kind of collage of theoretical references from both inside and outside the discipline of architecture, and use this collage as a framework of understandings relevant for the specific research question. Some set out to discuss, qualify, or reject, a specific theory, and some picks a selection of state-of-the-art positions within their field and uses them as a back-drop for the project.

Description
This PhD course consists of a series of moderated PhD presentations in which KADKs PhD students present their ongoing research. They are asked to present their research question and hypothesis, their method and their theoretical framework.

The presentations will be presented before a selected opponent and moderated by the course tutors.

Aim: The aim for the seminar is to

• give students feedback on ongoing research
• train students in their presentation skills
•  enable students a broad overview of the schools research environments, their research questions and methodologies
• create synergy and enable cross institutional dialogue

Format

The presentations will take place in plenum and are open to all KADK PhD students, supervisors, the schools staff and students as well as external interested parties. Presentations are expected to last 30 min with 20 min for discussion.

The seminar series will be planned at the start of the academy year (October) and a public poster (web based and physical) will be distributed across the school and to the relevant institutions.The presentation will be followed by a pamphlet including a biography, a short abstract and visual material (where applicable) given to the audience at the presentation.

 All KADK (or KADK Architecture School) PhD students are encouraged to participate enabling a yearlong program of monthly presentations. The seminar series will take place at lunchtime to enable broad participation.

The course will result in a small KADK Architecture PhD school publication in which your abstract will be present.

The course will provide 1.5 ECTS points. You are expected to follow the full lecture series.

Description
The course will address themes such as the relationship between the supervisor and the PhD candidate, process-focused supervision and how to handle different phases of the PhD proces, supervisor roles, communication and feedback techniques, collaborating with colleagues, and new trends and dilemmas in doctoral education.

 The goals of the course are that the participants will:

• understand the complexities involved in PhD supervision.
• acquire process-related knowledge about PhD supervision.
• be able to transfer knowledge of the course to their own supervisory practices.
• be in a position to reflect on their own supervising practices in the future.

Description
The workshop is targeted primarily for PhD students from practice-based degree programs. It is organized for those who are at the start of their PhD project, however the workshop will also be beneficial to students who are in an advanced stage of their research. The starting point is the participants' PhD work. Writing and oral presentation skills would be systematically developed through the revision of works and the dialogue with students.

In its first part the course develops students’ theoretical awareness and skills in seeking and organizing data and information (e.g.: (archives, interviews, data bases, journals, anthologies, catalogues, conferences, etc).. The main teaching objectives are to: help development of analytical and critical evaluation skills of published literature; introduce basic concepts of research, data collection; analysis of the state-of-the-art. In the first week students will have to identify the theoretical reason of their investigation and frame their hypothesis.

In the second week the focus is their research design. It is discussed each of the works research process and methods. Students will focus on the formulation of research problems, identification of key stages in their work and the managing of expectations. The overall teaching goals are to build a strong basis for successful thesis and academic research. The typical project will be a thesis proposal and a detailed literature review.

Registration should be completed with a) a short expression of interest and b) the PhD abstract. For the first time, each of the participants must have prepared an 8 min. presentation of his/her project.

Description
The aim of this workshop is to introduce participants to aspects of academic writing of scientific articles in English in terms of grammar and structure as related to genre and function, while providing time for participants to work on their own articles.

The course is inspired by a functional grammar and genre-based approach, and will include examples of generically appropriate sample texts with related exercises, as well as structured writing time for participants to work with their own texts.

Prerequisites

In order to participate in the workshop, participants must have at least started the writing process – this can be as little as having written an abstract and/or a disposition over what the article will address, or as much as a rough draft (of sections) of the article. Time will be made available each day to write, rewrite and edit your article during the workshop with help from the instructor and sparring with other participants.

Participants are expected to have a working level of written English language skills at the tertiary level. This workshop focuses on genre specific language patterns in academic writing and is not a language course as such.

• Participants must bring a computer / tablet and a USB memory stick for working on their own and other’s drafts.
• Participants may receive reading materials up to a week before the workshop.

The course introduces different approaches to design research currently used at KD. The aim is to establish an on-going discussion of research topics and methods at KD. Accordingly, the course will be repeated once a year.

The course is comprised of a one day symposium followed by a one day seminar.

The first symposium is a series of presentations given by researches from various research environments at the school. It offers an overview of research topics and methods and an opportunity to discuss different positions. Each presenter will provide a academic text from their field.  The individual presentations are followed by a general discussion on what characterizes the landscape of design research both in terms of topics and methods.

For the second seminar the participating Ph.D.-students will present a working paper presenting and reflecting upon how they position themselves in the roader landscape of design research both in terms of topic and method.  A discussion and commentary on the presentations will be moderated by the organizers.

It is possible to participate in the first seminar (also for non-phd students) without making the assignment. The essay can be written in both Danish and English and will be discussed in the corresponding language.  The full course is especially relevant for Ph.D.-students in the early phase of their project because it allows them to reflect upon their method. The first part of the course is relevant for all Ph.D.-students.

Learning goals:

Knowledge of research methods at KD and critical reflection upon the position of ones own method.

The Workshop Seminar is introducing light-weight simulation tools for early stage design strutural ideation. It further presents a hands-on training environment where participants work directly with CAD interfaced spring-based modelling exploring feedback between material behaviour and architectural structural design. The workshop is contextualised by a seminar with invited researchers reviewing workshop results and presenting examples of simulation driven design.
