MA Spatial Design examines the relationship between architecture, design and man from three perspectives: a historical, an anthropological and a tectonic/material perspective. 

History offers a particular insight into the relationship between architecture, design, the individual and society, and the historical perspective is important in a Danish context, where most tasks include reuse. 

The anthropological perspective has a similar awareness-creating function, relating to aspects of use and power within spatial organisation. 

The ability to work with tectonics (art of joining) and materials is crucial within architecture and design, and tectonics should be linked to an overall design strategy. The three perspectives will be introduced through workshops, seminars and in the teaching of our two studios. The ambition is to train reflective practitioners who are able to connect design skills in praxis with academic competencies. 

In order to insist on an interior as a starting point for the investigation, the projects will focus on certain areas where we have expertise among our staff: Transformation, Lighting Design, Spaces of Welfare, Tectonics of Interior Design, Exhibition and Experience Design and Urban Interiors.

Semester 1+3
Firstandsecondyearstudents work intwomixedstudiogroups. Eachstudiogrouphasadifferentcasestudyandstudioteachers,butthey areworkingtowardsthesameoutputsandlearningobjectives. In 1+3 the studio teaching will willsupplemented bylectures, seminarsandworkshops.

Inthefirsttwoweeksofthesemester, firstyearstudents participateinaworkshoptogetherwithallfirstyearmasterstudentsat the InstituteofArchitectureandDesign, whilethesecondyearstudentsparticipateinastudytripinDenmarkonlyforSpatialDesignstudentsand work on atheoreticalwritingassignmenttogetherwith the othersecondyearmasterstudentsat the InstituteofArchitectureandDesign.

Semester 2+4
Insemester 2+4, the studio teaching continues focusing on project design, supplemented by small “how-to-seminars”, lecturesandaoneweekstudy trip.


In the studio teaching the students investigate a site in groups / a case study in a Danish context followed by further focused analytical and diagnostic work within the field of spatial design. Investigative work for the semester culminate in a preliminary proposal to be taken forward to the following semester.

The seminars in semester 2+4 consist of nine two hours sessions on Tuesday mornings where the students meet their seminar teachers in order to discuss texts dealing with historical, anthropological and tectonic issues. Some of the seminars include small excursions. The “how-to-seminars” in the semester 2+4 offer the students more specific knowhow in relation to their project work.

The workshops in semester 1+3 consist of three autonomous one-week workshops where the students focus on historical, anthropological and tectonic issues by model building, photo registration and surveys.

The Theoretical Writing Assignment for second year students includes a common introduction workshop and individual supervision. 

The lectures in semester 1+3 consist of four lectures organised by Institute of Architecture and Design. In semester 2+4, the lectures will be organised by Spatial Design.

The study trip for first year students will be organized by the students assisted by teachers.

Both architecture and design students graduating in the Spring Semester combine their design proposal with a project report. 


The programme is taught in English.
